The rationale behind the proposal has been to strengthen swimming skills for women and girls. The moderates are now protesting the decision.

– It is stupid to finance gender-segregated bathhouses. It reduces accessibility to the bathhouse for both boys and girls, but above all it contributes to reproducing bad norms that girls and boys should be kept separate, says Christofer Fjellner, member of the Moderate party board.

Järva’s district council writes in the decision that they rather see that the decision leads to greater equality between women and men because swimming strengthens women’s health. A justification that provokes Christofer Fjellner.

“I think that is inappropriate”

– 100 years ago it was the norm in all bathhouses in Sweden to separate boys and girls, but a fight for women’s rights has made us move away from that view of boys and girls, says Christofer Fjellner, and continues:

– To say that we accept it and pay for it in the areas most clearly characterized by a culture of honor, I think that is inappropriate.

Women’s swimming to Husbybadet 2024

Since 2022, the Spånga-Tensta district council has, in collaboration with the sports administration, the swimming club Järva Crocodiles and local women’s associations in Tensta, trained local leaders at Tenstabadet. Operations in Husby are estimated to start in 2024.

– It is not a coincidence that it is in the areas where we have the most problems with a culture of honor, that this is where this behavior is tolerated. But it is the culture of honor that is the problem, not the swimming skills. The culture of honor is the serious problem that must be fought, says Christofer Fjellner.
