Modern shipping was born out of the idea that machines did not work. A century later, a Chinese company is putting primitive sails back into modern ships.
The company has added four additional 40-meter sails to the conventional diesel-powered vessel. The sails will be controlled by computers. When not needed, these carbon fiber sails retract with the push of a button.
On a recent voyage from the Middle East to the Eastern Shore, these sails saved 10 percent of diesel. For one trip, 2,900 tons of carbon-dioxide is avoided in the atmosphere.
