New Delhi: Gunmen attacked a prominent hotel in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu, killing four people, police officials said. It is noteworthy that the hotel is located a short distance from the Presidential Palace in central Mogadishu.

The news of the attack was reported by the AFP news agency, citing a security agency official. The security forces have cordoned off the hotel.

“Terrorist gunmen are inside a room in the building. Security forces will end the siege very soon… We have confirmed four deaths so far,” security official Mohammad Tahir told Reuters news agency.

The Villa Rose Hotel in Mogadishu is where government officials stay. Environment Minister Adam Aw Hirsi, who says terrorists targeted his residence there, tweeted that he was now safe. Somalia’s Minister of Internal Security, Mohamed Ahmed, was also reportedly injured in the attack.

It is not known how many people took over the hotel with explosives and guns. A witness to the attack told the news agency that he heard a loud explosion followed by heavy gunfire.
