Male: Maldives President Mohammad Muizzu has once again shown a positive attitude towards New Delhi. Muizzu has sent a congratulatory message on India’s 78th Independence Day. In the congratulatory message on the social media platform X, the President of Maldives said, ‘On the occasion of India’s Independence Day, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the President, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the people of India.’ Referring to the strong relationship between New Delhi and Male, he said, ‘Our enduring friendship, rooted in history, has evolved to promote prosperity and development in the Maldives and the region. As we look to the future, I am confident that our partnership will continue to strengthen, leading to mutual prosperity and shared goals.’
Tension in relations after Muizzu’s arrival
Relations between Male and New Delhi became strained after pro-China Mohammed Muizzu became the President of Maldives in late 2023. Mohammed Muizzu, who ran the India Out campaign in the presidential election, raised the issue of Indian soldiers in the Maldives soon after taking over the reins of the country. These military personnel were present in the Maldives to assist in the operation of the aircraft and aircraft provided by India. After this, India deployed civilian personnel in place of military personnel.
Anti-India stance started changing
Muizzu had adopted an anti-India stance since becoming the President. However, a lot of change has been seen in Muizzu’s stance recently. Muizzu also attended the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This was his first visit to India after becoming the President. In the month of May, Muizzu’s Foreign Minister Musa Zameer visited India. This was seen as a sign of the Muizzu government improving relations with India.
Jaishankar’s grand welcome in Maldives
Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar visited Male on a three-day visit from 9-12 August. During this, he was given a grand welcome by the Muizzu government of Maldives. During his meeting with Jaishankar, Muizzu thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for India’s cooperation. The Foreign Ministry of Maldives described Foreign Minister S Jaishankar’s visit to Male as an important milestone in bilateral relations.
