BCCI’s decision was not liked by Indian fans who felt that senior pacer Mohammad Shami would be a better option than Siraj. Shami was recently on rest due to Covid-19. The Indian board had earlier clarified that the player is free of Kovid but has not fully recovered yet. Mohammad Siraj’s record in the T20 format is not so good.
The pacer played his last T20 international against Sri Lanka in February 2022, judging by Siraj’s performances in the T20 format. He took only five wickets in five matches. The right-arm pacer has not much to show in the 20-over format. The star’s economy is also high.
Siraj was part of the Indian squad that faced Zimbabwe in the recent ODI series. The 28-year-old has been brilliant in that series and has bagged some crucial wickets for his team. Despite not performing well in the T20 format, Siraj has proved his mettle many times while representing Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Siraj, who has the ability to swing the ball on both sides, can excel with the new ball. Siraj also has the ability to take wickets with yorkers in the last overs.
Team India will face South Africa in the second T20I match at Guwahati Cricket Stadium on Sunday, October 2. Indian pacers including Arshdeep Singh and Deepak Chahar excelled with the ball in the first T20 encounter. It remains to be seen whether Siraj will get a chance to play in the remaining two matches.
