A lot must go wrong in next week’s return match for MFK not to be seen in the 3rd qualifying round. On Thursday, there was a significant difference between Erling Moe’s team and their Danish guests for long stretches.
After just 90 seconds, Markus Kaasa managed to break free and scored 1-0. Magnus Wolff Eikrem was the man who was second to last on the ball, and just before halftime, Molde’s captain placed the ball into the net for 2-1 after a brilliant attack.
Silkeborg had their best period between the home team’s two goals. The Danes took over the initiative, and in the 35th minute, they capitalized on a loss of possession. Alexander Lind found space centrally on the field and sent a low shot towards goal. Jacob Karlstrøm couldn’t reach it, and he didn’t receive help from his teammates in front of him.
After the break, Molde controlled almost everything. Kristian Eriksen scored the 3-1 goal early on after yet another good attack.
In the next round, either Scottish Kilmarnock or Cercle Brugge from Belgium awaits Molde if the job is completed in Denmark. These matches will be played on August 8 and 15.
If the Romsdalians progress, only one last hurdle will remain. They will be guaranteed a spot in the Conference League if things do not go their way in the playoffs.
Molde gets the chance in UEFA’s second most prestigious club tournament because the club is the reigning cup champions. Last year they reached the group stage in the Europa League.
On Sunday, Molde will face a tough away match against medal rivals Viking in the Eliteserien. Both teams suffered disappointing losses last weekend and must win to stay in the race for the top.
