The Moldovan delegation in Moscow could not agree on the terms of the extension of the gas supply contract with the Russian state concern Gazprom and left for Chisinau. The negotiations, which had lasted for two days, were interrupted on Friday, October 22nd.

The Moldovan side was represented by Deputy Prime Ministers Vladislav Kulminsky and Andrei Spinu, as well as Chairman of the Board of JSC Moldovagaz Vadim Cheban, from the Russian side the negotiations were attended by Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration Dmitry Kozak, representatives of Gazprom and the Russian government.

Gas supplies to Moldova under threat

According to Interfax, citing an informed source, gas supplies to Moldova after November 1 were under threat after the Moldovan side did not agree to the Russian offer of a “fair market price” with an additional discount of 25 percent, insisting ” twice as low as the market. “

The Russian side called the return of the debt for the supplied gas in the amount of $ 700 million as a condition for granting the discount, to which the Moldovan delegation did not agree.

Emergency due to lack of gas

Earlier in the day, the Moldovan parliament declared a state of emergency for one month due to the gas crisis. Currently, the needs of the Moldovan energy system for gas are covered only by 67%.

Ukraine is ready to help

Ukraine is ready to provide Moldova with assistance in the supply of a certain amount of gas, this issue will be considered by the government, said the secretary of the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council Alexei Danilov.

Moldova’s long-term contract with Gazprom, signed in 2006 and renewed annually since then, expired on 30 September. However, the agreement was extended for another month, during which Chisinau bought gas from the Russian concern at a price of $ 790 per thousand cubic meters. This is almost three times more expensive than at the beginning of the year, when gas for the country cost about $ 250 per thousand cubic meters.
