VERONA. “We didn’t do anything special”: say Davide and Giuseppe, two officers of the Flying Squad Roma of the Verona Police Headquarters who have watched over two little girls for a nightleft alone in their home in Cadidavid because their mother had been rushed to the emergency room due to illness. The woman herself had called for help, before losing her strength and falling to the ground in front of her little girls. When the police arrived, the older of the two – still visibly scared – told them what had happened, explaining that she was unable to notify a relative or a trusted person. At that moment, the two officers understood that the first thing to do was to reassure them about their mother’s health.
So, without ever leaving them alone, they made sure that the woman, who was hospitalized, got her cell phone back so she could call them and reassure them. Only after seeing them reassured, Davide and Giuseppe did their best to find a trusted person, but at that time the only one available was the grandmother, who lived in Bolzano. When the old lady heard the police officers’ story, she immediately set off to reach her granddaughters, even though the officers had assured her that there was no rush and that they would assist the girls. A promise they kept: when, around 7 in the morning, Grandma reached her granddaughters at home, she found them still in the company of Davide and Giuseppe, having breakfast with croissants that the two policemen had brought.
“Nothing special, because anyone would have done it for two very young girls, but it brought a smile to a family in a difficult moment,” the two officers said. “They could have taken the girls to the police station, but they sensitively understood that it would have been an even bigger shock for them than seeing me go away in an ambulance,” the mother said when she showed up at the police station to personally thank Davide and Giuseppe.
