Champion of France 24 times, Véronique Jardin-Gastaldello died this Thursday, following a long illness, at the age of 56. A member of the circle of swimmers in Marseille, she had participated in the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1984 and Barcelona in 1992. One of her last wishes was that her daughter, Béryl Gastaldello (28), world champion in the 4×50 meters mixed freestyle in short course in 2022, participates in the French championships which open in Rennes, this Sunday.
In a moving message posted on an Instagram account, she announced that she would honor this wish: “Before leaving, mom asked me to participate in these French championships, she asked me with all the strength that characterized her. I will be present in Rennes (June 11 to 16) but I simply ask everyone to respect my pain and my privacy. »
Béryl Gastaldello, who has already been crowned ten times at the national level, added: “Mom has gone to join dad”. She had already lost her father in May 2016. Also a swimmer, he had won the French championship in 50 meters breaststroke in 1984 as well as in 100 meters breaststroke in 1983.
