The Premier League season 2023/2024 looks set to be both even and exciting, with the battle for the league title alive for several of the teams.
The gap at the top of the table narrowed considerably for league leaders Liverpool when they lost 3-1 to Arsenal last weekend. The following day, Manchester City followed up, when they beat Brentford 3-1 away.
Before this weekend’s upcoming round, only two points separate the top three teams. A further two points behind in fourth place, Aston Villa are tightening their grip on a top four finish.
Manchester United had a bad start to the season, but have sharpened their form and so far have not lost in 2024. Aston Villa is coming off a big win against the table jumper and is about to tighten its grip on a position among the top four.

United win in the last three meetings
Aston Villa and Manchester United have met a total of 57 times in the Premier League. United have been the clear best team and won 39 of the matches. Villa have only won five, while 13 have ended in a draw.
When they last met just over a month ago, it was Villa who went into the break with a comfortable 2-0 lead. A turnaround from United with two goals from Alejandro Garnacho and one from Denmark’s Rasmus Højlund meant that United won the match 3-2.
The win is United’s third straight win against Aston Villa. The last time Aston Villa emerged victorious from a match against United was at the start of November 2022.
Undefeated in 2024
Manchester United suffered their worst start to a season since 1962-63, losing twelve of their first 24 games of the season.
After the New Year, United have been back in winning form and have won four of the year’s five games. Before this weekend’s league round, United are in 6th place in the table.
The last three games have ended with three straight victories. First against Newport, where United had a tough time against the fourth division team for a period, they recovered and won 4-2.
In the league match against Wolverhampton, United again seemed to go on a rampage, when Wolves equalized with a goal five minutes into extra time. Two minutes later, 18-year-old Kobbie Mainoo saved United’s honor when he scored to secure a 4-3 victory.
In the league match against West Ham last round, United won 3-0 after scoring three goals in the second half.
One of the league’s best home teams
Aston Villa have won 14 of the season’s 23 games, lost five and drawn four. Only the three teams at the top of the table have won more games than Aston Villa.
Before this weekend’s round, the Birmingham team is in fourth place in the table. Three points behind Manchester City and Arsenal, and with two points more than Tottenham. Down to Manchester United there are eight points.
Aston Villa is coming off a big win against table jumbo Sheffield United, where they went into the break with a 4-0 lead. In the second half, they scored another goal in the match where it ended 5-0.
At home, Villa have been one of the league’s best teams this season. In the previous home game, they lost 3-1 against Newcastle, in what is the club’s first at home in the 2023/24 season.
