Kiev has called on Mongolia to detain Russian President Vladimir Putin under an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) when the Russian leader arrives on a state visit to the Asian country on September 3, Reuters reported.
The Kremlin, for its part, said it had no concerns about the trip.
The ICC issued the arrest warrant for Putin in March last year in connection with allegations of the illegal deportation of hundreds of children from Ukraine. The Kremlin has dismissed the accusations as politically motivated.
The order obliges the 124 member states of the ICC, including Mongolia, to arrest Putin and hand him over to the court in The Hague, in the event that the Russian president sets foot on the territory of any of these countries, BTA reported.
“We call on the Mongolian authorities to comply with the mandatory international arrest warrant and hand Putin over to the ICC in The Hague,” the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said in Telegram.
Earlier today, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was asked if Moscow was troubled by the fact that Mongolia is a member of the ICC. “No, I’m not worried about that. We have a wonderful dialogue with our friends from Mongolia,” Peskov replied.
