Car insurance companies promised discounts for careful driving. But there are not enough good drivers in Germany.

It’s a tempting promise: if you drive safely, you save money. German insurers have been advertising their telematics tariffs with this offer for years. “Pay how you drive” is the name of the principle in which the customer’s driving style is monitored via a smartphone app or a sensor on the windshield. For example, what is measured is how hard the driver brakes or accelerates, what speed he is traveling on the road or how sharply he takes corners. After each ride, a score is calculated indicating how well a customer drove.

If you drive with foresight and caution, you can reap premium savings of up to 40 percent from some providers. The more carefully a customer drives based on their telematics tariff, the lower the likelihood of an accident. At least that’s what the insurers hope. Because fewer accidents reduce the burden on companies’ claims expenses. So telematics tariffs are actually a benefit for everyone, right?
