Monkeypox outbreak as good as over, RIVM stops vaccinations

by time news

In the past two weeks, only nine people have been diagnosed with the virus.

According to the RIVM, the containment of the virus is due to a combination of the vaccinations, the changed behavior of the group that was at high risk of infection and natural immunity after being infected. It is not yet known how great the effect of the vaccination was.

Virus can revive again

Until the end of this month, people at risk of infection will be invited to come and get two shots. The RIVM warns that the virus can still resurface.

In November, a group of experts will consider whether vaccinations or other measures might be necessary in the future. Revivals in the summer period or people from abroad who bring the virus with them could cause more infections again.

Last summer, the monkeypox virus spread rapidly across Europe, quickly reaching several thousand cases, mainly in Portugal, Spain and the United Kingdom. A state of emergency has been declared in several US states due to a shortage of vaccines.

Especially men who have sex with men became infected with monkey pox this summer. The virus spreads through skin-to-skin contact, it is not an STI. The first symptoms are fever, swollen lymph nodes and skin rash. Previously, the virus mainly occurred in Central and West Africa.
