An unusual incident occurred at a middle school in Kaohsiung, Taiwan: a troop of aggressive monkeys invaded the school grounds, looking for shelter from the abnormal heat and food. This happened on Wednesday, July 17. The primates climbed onto the roofs and turned everything upside down in the classrooms, rummaging through the students’ backpacks.

The school administration responded immediately, ordering children to remain in their classrooms and closing all windows and doors. Principal Liao Yuyun personally walked around the area, banging a stick on the floor to scare the animals away. She emphasized that her actions were not intended to harm the animals, but to scare them away. Eventually, unable to find access to the building, the monkeys left the school.

The incident prompted a lot of comment from the students. One of them noted ironically: “We are not afraid of anyone except the principal. I think the monkeys are the same.”

After school, the monkeys headed to nearby shops, continuing their destructive activities. Local shopkeepers advised that it was best not to resist the animals and let them take what they wanted to avoid conflict.
