The Government and the insurance company confirmed that compensation for sabotage of the Montecristi radar has been paid.

The Interoceanic insurance company reported that on Thursday, July 25, it paid for the explosion that occurred at the Montecristi anti-drug radar in November 2021.

The insurance company said it provided a “certified check with the limit value established by the Terrorism, Malicious Damage and Sabotage coverage,” without specifying the amount.

The check was delivered to the Ministry of Defense, “once the corresponding processes were completed,” Interoceánica explains.

This was also confirmed in a statement by the Presidency of the Republic, but the amount was not specified.

The Ministry of Defense also did not confirm the amount of the check received when asked by PRIMICIAS: it described the information as “secret.” However, the Ecuavisa channel – citing sources who participated in the negotiation process with the insurer – assured that the company paid USD 4,980,000.

The device began operating on October 27, 2021, on the Montecristi hill, Manabí province, but it only worked for 11 days. In the early hours of Sunday, November 7, 2021, a “mysterious explosion” destroyed it.

An internal report ruled out that the explosion was caused by equipment failures.

In this case, a judge from Manabí called 10 of the 14 defendants to trial for their alleged participation – in the degree of omission – in the crime of sabotage, for the explosion of the radar.

In addition to the criminal investigation, 16 officers and nine airmen within the Armed Forces were sanctioned in administrative proceedings as responsible for what happened with the radar.
