It was to be the happiest day of their lives. A couple’s wedding ceremony was banned on Saturday by the mayor of Montpellier (Hérault), Michaël Delafosse, due to “significant overflows” in the procession of vehicles, several local media reported.

“The procession of vehicles accompanying the newlyweds has largely disturbed traffic by carrying out traffic interruptions on the A709, hampered with the regulations of the Highway Code by endangering many road users as well as pedestrians”, detailed the town hall in a press release, also denouncing “motorized rodeos” and the use of fireworks.

Overflows that contravene the marriage charter adopted in 2020 by the municipality. Signed by the future spouses, the text provides in particular for the cancellation of the celebration in the event of “disturbing public order”. “The excesses that occurred that day thus led to the application of the decree regulating the proper conduct of civil marriage ceremonies and Michaël Delafosse, Mayor of the City of Montpellier, therefore took the decision to prohibit the celebration of this marriage, ”said the town hall.

“The wedding hall is not a football stadium”

Many cities now have future spouses sign this type of charter, recalls France 3. In Béziers (Hérault), the municipality prohibits, for example, the display of foreign flags or banners. “The Béziers wedding hall is not a football stadium,” she argued when the charter was adopted in 2019.

As in Montpellier, excesses are regularly denounced by town halls during wedding ceremonies. Last January, the mayor of Épinay-sur-Seine (Seine-Saint-Denis) had taken a similar decision by refusing to celebrate a union, because of “multiple disorders” caused by the procession: “urban rodeos”, many guests “sitting on the doors”, firing of firecrackers, fireworks and even physical and verbal aggression from passers-by.
