Former president of Telefónica César Alierta (Zaragoza, 1945-2024) died this Wednesday at the age of 78 at the Quirón clinic in Zaragoza after the worsening of his illness. Alerta has suffered serious health problems the last few years and even in 2020 he was also admitted in a coma induced by a cardiovascular problem.
The Aragonese lawyer and businessman was the executive president of Telefónica from July 2000 to April 2016. Five years earlier, also in the same city, Alierta received the Empresari Espanyol Global prize (The Global Spanish Entrepreneur), awarded by the Chamber of Commerce of Spain-United States. An award that recognized the entry of the Telefónica Group into the Dow Jones Global Titans 50 stock index in New York.
Alierta became president of Telefónica in 2000, at the initiative of the Spanish government of José María Aznar, replacing Juan Villalonga in the position.
He also chaired the Remuneration Committee and was a member of the Appointments Committee of the Board of Directors of International Consolidate Airlines Group (IAG), the company resulting from the merger between Iberia and British Airways.
In addition, since its creation, in February 2011, he chaired the Business Council for Competitiveness (CEC), an entity made up of 15 large companies and the Family Business Institute which adds commitments and efforts to provide proposals that improve competitiveness, help economic recovery and strengthen international confidence in Spain.
