The Holy See also declared allegiance to the Paris Agreement on climate change.

The Holy See made the announcement in a press release on Wednesday (06/07/22). The Holy See, which did not sign this treaty at the beginning, has joined the countries that have signed it and ratified it in a second step.

The Holy See stated that the purpose of this action is to provide moral support to the efforts of each country to cooperate effectively and adequately according to its capacity and responsibility to the challenges posed by climate change to our humanity and common home. The Paris Agreement is the culmination of global efforts to combat climate change. A key feature of the agreement is the commitment to limit global warming to below two degrees Celsius by 2050. For this purpose, from 2020, rich countries will give 10,000 crore rupees to developing countries. This amount will be increased by 2025.

A balance between emissions and absorption of greenhouse gases should be possible by the second half of the century, review the progress of actions taken by the world’s nations to combat climate change every five years, signatories to the agreement submit a progress report once in five years, and take action to limit the increase in global temperature to no more than 2 degrees Celsius. The key proposals in the Paris Agreement include gradually limiting that increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

At the UN climate summit held in Paris, on December 12, 2015, the nations of the world approved the final agreement to control global warming. 196 countries have signed the agreement. The agreement came into effect in 2020.
