Offenbach – The Advent season is approaching, and while some people are planning Christmas presents and festive meals, at the end of this year more and more people don’t know how they will finance their next supermarket purchases. Therefore, the city and municipal utilities are again donating 10,000 euros to Tafel Offenbach.

“Inflation leads to less money in the wallet and unsettles many people, even if it is slowly easing. “But prices have continued to rise, so more and more people are dependent on support,” said Mayor Dr. Felix Schwenke handing over the check. “Especially during Advent, everyone should know and feel that no one is forgotten.” The non-profit aid organization Tafel distributes food to those in need once a week at Krafftstrasse and four other distribution points, for which Schwenke thanked everyone involved with a handshake.

In 2020, the food bank had to care for around 800 affected people. Now almost twice as many come, while donations are declining. “We therefore have every reason to continue to support the Tafel manager Christine Sparr and her approximately 50 volunteers,” said Stadtwerke managing director Peter Walther. The club is “an excellent example of lived solidarity in Offenbach”. The city and municipal utilities wanted to do their part. The support is needed more urgently than ever, said the Tafel boss happily: “In fact, we hardly had any reserves left, as we receive fewer and fewer food donations from retailers – I can finally buy the next round on a large scale for our clientele.” The Social worker, who has been with the food bank for 18 years, is one of only three living recipients of the Plaque of Honor, the city’s second highest honor. “I remember good times when we had too much merchandise to spend,” Sparr said. “Today I’m constantly traveling by car to exchange our goods with other food banks in half of Germany and to get people halfway supplied.” Christine Sparr saves about a quarter of the donated sum for Christmas: Then there are bags in Offenbach Gingerbread and sweets. “The grannies like dominoes best – and we guarantee that every child gets a Santa Claus!”
