What do we find in the collective memory of Covid-19 for the year 2021? Jumble: a third confinement which was not really one, the start of the vaccination campaign at the doctor’s office or under the tents of a vaccinodrome, the invention of the health pass opening the doors of bars and restaurants, and the emergence, at the end of the year, of a variant, Omicron, set to dominate throughout the world.

France, like many other countries, was far from having finished with the acute phase of the pandemic, which is confirmed by two joint studies of the causes of mortality in 2021 published, Tuesday, December 19, by Public Health France (SPF) and the Directorate of Research, Studies, Evaluation and Statistics (Drees), based on statistics established by the Center for the Epidemiology of Deaths of the National Institute of Health and Medical Research (CépiDC- Inserm).

As in 2020, Covid-19 represented the third cause of death in France in 2021, with nearly 61,000 deaths, or 9.2% of the total. This share is hardly lower than in 2020 (10.4%, or 69,000 deaths). The victims of the new coronavirus were also younger, with a median age of 84 years, compared to 86 years the previous year. For 88% of deaths due to Covid-19, at least one comorbidity or complication is mentioned on the death certificate, compared to 86.5% in 2020.

Tumors, leading cause of death in 2021

In total, 660,000 deaths were recorded for 2021, with an excess mortality of 43,000 deaths (compared to 48,000 in 2021) compared to the figure expected in the absence of an epidemic. In the face of Covid-19, tumors represented the leading cause of mortality, with 25.7%. They remain in decline, with the exception of pancreatic tumors and melanomas. In second place come diseases of the “circulatory system”, that is to say the cardiovascular system, at 20.9%.

According to SPF, “the impact of the Covid-19 epidemic on mortality is still major in 2021”. The disease killed younger people, “while the mortality of those over 85 increased, from one year to the next, from 1,900 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants to 1,467”, details Elise Coudin, director of CépiDC, a drop of almost 23%. She recalls that vaccination, available for older people from the end of December 2020, was only accessible to the entire population six months later.

François Clanché, project director at Drees, notes that “three quarters of Covid deaths occurred in the first half of the year”. “For the youngest, compared to 2020, 2021 was the year of the lifting of constraints, the Covid circulated more and caused more damage, he reminds. The oldest were protected by vaccination as well as by their behavior and that of their families and friends. »
