In the fight against the so-called packaging flood, plastic is the main target. However, other packaging, such as wood, is not recycled at all.

Since 2022, consumers have been paying a deposit of 25 cents per bottle on the majority of beverage bottles made from single-use plastic. There was a transition period for milk and milk drinks, which now ends in the new year. Then it will become clear whether the reverse vending machines go on strike more often because of sticky remaining stocks, such as yoghurt drinks.

Previously, empty milk drink bottles made from single-use plastic were collected in the yellow bag. The quite demanding legal recycling targets are largely achieved in the dual systems. When it comes to plastic packaging, they are even exceeded at 67.5 percent.

The “flood of plastic” is already largely being successfully channeled in Germany. The situation is completely different with packaging made of bamboo, wood, jute, ceramic or cork. In practice, they are not recycled and are therefore particularly problematic, according to the Federal Environment Agency. A sensible motto for the coming year would be: More sense of proportion in the packaging dispute.
