Ben Stokes hit a half-century off the first 47 balls and then a century off the next 17 balls. Worcestershire’s Josh Baker hit 34 off 117 overs with five sixes and a four.
He scored a century off 64 balls and became the fastest Durham batsman to score a first-class century. Earlier, Durham’s Paul Collingwood hit a 75-ball 100.
Stokes scored 161 off 88 balls, including 17 sixes and eight fours, before Durham’s declared 580 for 6 in the first innings.
Stokes became the highest-scoring player in an innings in the county championship with 17 sixes in the tournament.
Symonds, who previously played for Gloucestershire, and Graham Napier, who played for Essex, each hit 16 sixes.
