Over the past few days, 586 fires have broken out in Greece across the country, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotaki said. The authorities have already arrested more than 10 people involved in the arson.

During his address to fellow citizens, Mr. Mitsotaki said that the fires in the country have reached “unprecedented proportions”, and they are difficult to cope with due to the heat and drought. He said that due to fires in 141 regions of Greece, 62 evacuations of residents were organized.

The prime minister thanked all the countries that provided assistance to Greece, and also asked forgiveness from the Greeks for the mistakes made by the authorities. “I fully understand the pain of our fellow citizens who saw the burnt houses or property. Upsetting those who have been forced to leave their home. Even the anger of those who seek, for example, help from the air, not knowing whether fire planes have arrived, ”said Kyriakos Mitsotaki, quoted by the ERT TV channel.

In three days, Greek fire investigators arrested more than 10 people for arson. Some of them were committed intentionally, some by negligence. The arrests took place, inter alia, in Corfu (an island off the north-western coast of Greece), in the city of Larissa (217 km north-west of Athens) and in the vicinity of Piraeus (the third largest city in Greece), as well as in the center of Athens and in Kalamata (255 km south-west of Athens), where one of the largest fires took place, RIA Novosti reports, citing data from the fire service.

On the eve of July 8, Greece asked Russia to provide it with two Il-76 aircraft and two Mi-8 helicopters to extinguish fires. This topic was raised during a telephone conversation between First Deputy Foreign Minister of Greece Miltiadis Varvitsiotis and Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation Vitaly Savelyev.

Fires started in Greece in July due to prolonged 40-degree heat waves. Last week, authorities banned residents from walking into the forest and also called for travel restrictions.
