Amsterdam police detained more than 100 environmental activists from the Extinction Rebellion organization who blocked one of the city’s busy roads.
As Day.Az reports with reference to TASS, NOS TV channel reported this.
According to the broadcaster, eight cars in two places blocked the ring road, putting the lives of other road users at risk. Activists took to the road outside the former headquarters of ING Bank and demanded that the financial institution immediately stop financing mining companies. The police were forced to intervene in the situation and detained about 100 people. Two hours later, traffic was resumed.
“About 30 people detained are suspected of actions that could potentially lead to traffic accidents,” NOS noted. “The rest were detained for violating the law on public meetings.”
Earlier, about 30 pro-Palestinian demonstrators blocked the road next to Amsterdam Central Station. This led to traffic jams and unrest among motorists, but the demonstrators dispersed before the police intervened.
Law enforcement agencies noted that the activists chose an extremely unfortunate day, since April 27 is King’s Day in the Netherlands and a lot of effort is put into ensuring order at events taking place throughout the city. “On one of the busiest days of the year, the Amsterdam police also had to respond to these protests,” law enforcement officers noted. “This led to the need to remove a number of officers from providing security in the city.”
