Ecuador is experiencing hours of anguish for the third consecutive day with more than a hundred police and prison staff held by prisoners, attacks on journalists and numerous armed attacks.

According to a Wednesday report from the penitentiary authority, 139 officials of that institution are being held in different facilities, specifically in the Ecuadorian prisons of Cuenca, Azogues, Napo, Ambato and Latacunga.

Through videos, the inmates demand that the government not intervene in the prisons while they threaten the prison staff, who were held in riots since Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa decreed a state of emergency in that country.

As indicated by the National Comprehensive Care Service (SNAI) for Adult Persons Deprived of Liberty and Adolescent Offenders, the “National Police and Armed Forces continue to work jointly for the release of all personnel in penitentiary centers,” said the penitentiary entity. .

Faced with the new wave of violence, Noboa, 36, declared Ecuador in “internal armed conflict” on Tuesday, after having ordered a state of emergency on Monday.

Violence broke out after Adolfo Macías, alias “Fito,” head of the country’s main criminal gang known as Los Choneros, escaped from prison.
