Approximately 120,000 Israeli civilians submitted applications for firearms permits, because on October 7, some 1,400 people were killed in Israel in the Hamas attack.
Following the Israeli government’s announcement that it would relax its gun laws, those eligible – without a criminal record or health complications – can now obtain a license to carry a weapon within a week.
Additionally, people are allowed to possess up to 100 bullets, up from 50 previously.
The Minister of National Security, the far-right Itamar Ben-Gvir, a long-time defender of private gun ownership, has been touring the country delivering thousands of weapons.
Ben-Givir said the new weapons were specifically intended for those living near the Gaza border or in mixed Jewish-Arab cities, and encouraged all such Jewish communities to form civilian security teams.
