More than 1,200 Jewish Hollywood figures have already expressed their disagreement with director Jonathan Glazer’s remarks during the Oscars by signing an open letter.

This was reported by the Telegram channel “Today in Israel”.

Among the signatories are The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, film director Eli Roth, actress Jennifer Jason Leigh and other famous personalities such as Debra Messing, Brett Gelman, Michael Rappaport, who actively support Israel in its war against the terrorist group Hamas.

Jonathan Glazer, who won an Oscar for best international film about the Holocaust, mentioned in his speech that Israel’s actions could make him forget his Jewish roots. He argues that the Holocaust and the current “occupation” that results in the death of innocents are linked, be it the victims of the tragic events of October 7 or the casualties during the fighting in Gaza.

The words drew strong backlash for their wording, which implied Glaser’s rejection of Jewish identity, and for the comparison he made, arguing that Israeli actions in Gaza and the dehumanization that preceded the Holocaust were similar.

“We deny that our Jewishness was stolen in order to establish a moral equivalence between the Nazi regime, which sought to exterminate an entire race, and the Israeli people, who seek to prevent their own extermination,” the statement said.

The letter’s authors also deplore the deaths of Palestinian Arab civilians, but blame Hamas, not Israel, and point out that Glazer’s use of the term “occupation” is inappropriate to refer to the entire state of Israel.
