More than 30 people were trapped under rubble when a mine collapsed in a region of Zambia known for illegal copper mining, the interior minister said. “We have more than 30 people under the rubble” of a makeshift mine, Jack Mwiimbu told Parliament.
“I want to inform the nation that a tragedy is underway in Chingola,” he added without giving further details. The mines ministry made no comment, saying it would first carry out an inspection at the site, in the Chingola region, about 400 km north of the capital Lusaka.
Zambia is one of the largest producers of copper. In the Chingola region there is one of the largest open-cast copper mines in the world and some of the hills formed from mine waste are around a hundred meters high.
