More than 400 students of Early Childhood and Primary Education have visited the laboratories of the University of La Rioja thanks to the activity ‘Science through experimentation’

A total of 409 students of Early Childhood and Primary Education from six centers in Logroo have participated this course in the activity ‘Science through experimentation’ through workshops in which, guided by students from the degrees in Early Childhood Education and P rimaria, have been developed in the laboratories of the Technological Scientific Complex of the University of La Rioja.

The objective of this initiative is to bring science closer to younger students through simple experiments that allow them to observe, manipulate and draw conclusions about everyday situations and phenomena.

The visit, lasting 2 hours per shift, is for most of the children their first contact with the University and leaves a great impact on their memory.

Throughout the 2022-2023 school year, 200 boys and girls from 5th and 6th grade and 209 from Early Childhood Education (5 years old) from the Gonzalo de Berceo, Bretn de los Herreros, Caballero de la Rosa, Seven Infants of Lara, Madre de Dios and La Guindalera, from Logroo.

The experiments carried out have been the extraction of DNA from fruits, the creation of volcanoes and rockets, the visualization of flowers with a magnifying glass, vitamin C tests in fruits and the activity of observing ‘little bugs’ insects.

The monitors of these workshops have been students of the degrees in Early Childhood and Primary Education of the UR, who collaborate in this project within the subject Didactics of Experimental Sciences, coordinated by Professor Beatriz Robredo Valgan. Thus, they are provided with the tools for their future teaching work, while practical activities for the teaching of science are valued.

This activity has the collaboration of the UR Scientific Culture Unit (UCC+i) and the support of the Spanish Science and Technology Foundation (FECYT) – Ministry of Science and Innovation.
