Fifty-four people died and more than 450 were injured in Angola, in recent days, as a result of the rains, revealed this Friday, Minister of State and Head of the Military House of the President of the Republic, Francisco Furtado.

According to the minister, who was taking stock of the damage caused by the storms of recent days, the numbers presented are preliminary and with incalculable consequences.

The heavy rainfall recorded over the last 30 days, which has affected the entire national territory, has already affected around 44,000 people and more than 4,380 homes have been damaged in Luanda.

He referred that the main causes are the economic and social vulnerabilities of the populations, the high degree of exposure to risk, the disorderly occupation of land, the multi-deficiencies of urban infrastructures and the non-compliance with housing construction codes.

He informed that in addition to measures to mitigate the situation, the Executive will discourage people who, due to administrative disobedience, continue to put their lives in danger.

He said that municipal administrations are working to shelter the victims in a safe place.

Francisco Furtado admitted that the situation is critical and requires urgent measures to be taken, such as the contingency plan being prepared by the Executive, to be implemented as of next week.

He explained that under the aforementioned plan conditions are being created to support the victims with plates, materials for shelters, clothes, food and health care, among other means. VIC
