More than 64,000 people, including 60,000 Sudanese, have fled to Egypt to escape the fighting between the Army and the powerful paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (FAR) that have been ravaging Sudan since April 15, he told EFE. a spokeswoman for the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).

“The latest arrival figures reported directly by the (Egyptian) Foreign Ministry to UNHCR on May 7 are more than 64,000 people crossing into Egypt, including 60,222 Sudanese,” said the spokeswoman for the United Nations agency in Egypt, Christine Beshay.

He indicated that most people seeking shelter are “women and children with urgent needs that include medical care, food, water and transportation.”

The fighting, which has not stopped despite the entry into force of several cessations of hostilities, has so far caused more than 550 deaths and injured more than 5,000 others, while exacerbating the humanitarian crisis that was already plaguing Sudan. and has squandered much of the country’s health facilities.

Egypt continues to be the country that receives the most Sudanese fleeing the conflict in its territory after crossing through land border crossings.

According to UNHCR figures, Some 100,000 people have already crossed from Sudan to other countries with borderswith Egypt and Chad being the ones that have received the most through their land routes.

The United Nations agency estimates that it will need 445 million dollars to help the 860,000 people who are expected to flee Sudan in the next six months because of the clashes between the Army, led by Abdelfatah al Burhan, and the FAR, commanded by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, alias Hemedti.

With this aid, UNHCR intends to financially support Chad, South Sudan, Egypt, Ethiopia and the Central African Republic, host countries for the main flows of refugees.

In the last three weeks, the fighting has also caused the displacement of 330,000 people inside Sudan.
