More than 70 percent of the French expressed their dissatisfaction with the performance of President Emmanuel Macron, as a result of his issuance, on April 15, of a decree reforming the pension system.

While only about 26 percent of the participants expressed their satisfaction with the president’s performance, down two points compared to a similar survey last March, according to a new survey conducted by the Institute of Opinion and Marketing Studies (IFOP), for the newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche.

Of the 72 percent of respondents who expressed dissatisfaction with the president, 47 percent said they were “very dissatisfied,” up 7 percent from last month’s poll.

The survey was conducted electronically between April 14 and 21, and included a sample of 1,955 French people who had completed 18 years of age.

Macron resorted to passing the pension reform according to a constitutional mechanism without bringing it before the House of Representatives (the National Assembly), due to the lack of a majority in favor of it.

Last Saturday, the Official Gazette published the controversial pension reform decree, which is opposed by the unions and the opposition in France.

The decree comes after the Constitutional Council approved the most important part of the project, which has become a symbol of Macron’s second term.

While the Council, whose decisions are not subject to appeal, rejected a number of secondary articles in “reform”, and rejected a draft referendum called for by the left.

He did not object to the main measure in the project, “which raises the legal retirement age from 62 to 64 years.”

The French government justifies raising the retirement age to 64 years by the need to “address the financial deterioration of pension funds and the aging population.”
