It was found that more than 8 out of 10 Korean citizens perceive Korea as a maritime country.
On the 23rd, the Korea Maritime and Fisheries Development Institute (KMI Director Kim Jong-deok) announced the results of a ‘National Awareness of Marine and Fisheries’ survey conducted among the general public (adult men and women aged 19 and older nationwide).
The 2024 public awareness survey on marine and fisheries was conducted to mark the 40th anniversary of KMI’s founding with the purpose of setting research, policy and promotion directions based on public awareness and demand for marine and fisheries.
The survey found that more than 8 out of 10 Korean citizens perceive our country as a maritime country.
Regarding the vision of a maritime nation, the majority of the people gave a positive evaluation, with 83.2% saying, ‘Our country must move forward to become a maritime nation.’ Also, regarding the expected effects that can be expected once a maritime power is realized, ‘foundation for economic leap forward, including exports’ (71.9 points), ‘strengthen national competitiveness’ (71.2 points), and ‘secure a safe import and export logistics network’ (71.1 points) ), and ‘Contributes to the leap forward as a developed fisheries industry’ (71.0 points).
As areas necessary to become a maritime power, the highest responses were ‘Establishment of a mid- to long-term national plan to build a maritime power’ and ‘Expansion of science and technology R&D in the marine and fisheries field’ at 37.2% and 36.7%, respectively.
The images associated with the word ‘marine and fisheries’ were selected in the following order: ‘sea/beach/beach’ (23.9%), ‘ship/ship’ (19.1%), and ‘fish/fish’ (16.9%). Regarding the items of interest in the marine and fisheries field, ‘marine territory’, ‘marine ecosystem and marine environment’, and ‘fish food safety’ were the highest at 42.6% each. Additionally, interest in ‘fish food safety’ increased by 2.1% points compared to the previous year.
Compared to other maritime countries, the areas of excellence were ‘level of support for activating ship (shipbuilding/offshore plant) construction’ (55.8%), followed by ‘level of port infrastructure and cargo volume security’ (43.2%), which are currently urgently needed. As for policies that should be promoted, the highest response was ‘level of protection and management of rare and extinct marine species’ (44.4%), followed by ‘construction of a livable fishing village and level of welfare for fishermen’ (34.8%).
As for the evaluation of marine fisheries due to internal and external environmental changes, the evaluation that ‘the crisis of population extinction in fishing villages and coastal areas has become more serious’ was the highest, at 72.9 points, the same as last year. This was followed by ‘Changes in the international situation are affecting the marine and fisheries sector’ (71.0 points), and ‘Awareness of environmental protection has increased as the ice cover in the South and North Poles has intensified’ (69.8 points).
