More than 90 people died on Sunday as a result of a shipwreck in the province of Nampula, in northern Mozambique, said the Secretary of State of the Province.
The victims died following the sinking of a vessel leaving the administrative post of Lunga bound for Ilha de Moçambique, said Jaime Neto, adding that authorities suspect that overcrowding was the reason for the sinking.
“The boat was carrying around 130 people, but it didn’t have the capacity to do so. Therefore, it sank and at least, so far confirmed, 91 people died. The bodies have already been recognized”, declared Jaime Neto, quoted on Sunday night by Televisão de Moçambique (TVM).
According to the official, authorities at the administrative post of Lunga, 189 kilometers from the city of Nampula (provincial capital), are taking steps to locate people who are still missing.
“It is a complicated situation and the Lunga administrative post is taking some steps to locate other people who were on the vessel”, concluded Jaime Neto.
