More than half of people of sub-Saharan African descent living in Belgium say they have been victims of racism or discrimination in the last five years, a survey by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) revealed on Wednesday, entitled “ Being black in the European Union“. If the average stands at 56% in Belgium, it is 45% in the European Union (EU), which represents an increase compared to the 39% recorded during the last survey dating from 2016.
Indeed, this new report “ shows that, despite binding anti-discrimination legislation in force in the EU since 2000 and significant policy developments since then, people of sub-Saharan African descent continue to face racism, discrimination and hate crimes« .
For the first time, the survey also covers Belgium. And it turns out that its average results are worse than those recorded in the EU. For example, 40% of 459 people surveyed in Belgium say they have been harassed, compared to 30% in the EU.
Belgium is far from being the worst student. The countries where people of sub-Saharan African descent most report experiencing racism are Germany (76%), Austria (72%) and Finland (63%). Countries that record “ best » scores, meanwhile, are Poland (20%), Sweden (25%) and Portugal (26%). In view of the results, the agency calls “ EU countries to take urgent action to combat racist discrimination and harassment to ensure dignified and equal treatment for everyone« .
