Death and the expenses it entails is a concern for the majority of Vigo residents. More than half of the population of Vigo and the province has contracted death insurance; In fact, they are the Galicians who pay the most for one of them. For a population of around 943,474 inhabitants, more than 505,605 are insured, that is, the 53,59% of the residents of the province of Pontevedra.

At the end of 2022, in Spain, death insurance covered 22,173,501 people, which represents 46.6% of the population; a percentage that has grown gently in recent years. It is data from the report ‘Death insurance in Spain. Data 2022’developed at the initiative of Unespa, the Spanish Union of Insurance and Reinsurance Entities, in which around 200 insurance companies are present.

Unequal presence by provinces

Death insurance is one of the most widespread protections, along with car and life insurance. One of the most notable characteristics of this service is the high presence it has throughout the national territory, although it is not the same in all provinces. The province with the highest volume of insured people in relative terms is Cádiz, where 78% of residents are covered. However, it is much less widespread in Navarra, where only 24% have it hired. In 2022, Lugo was the province that experienced the greatest increase in death insurance coverage

Those under 30 years of age who live alone, the households that hire the least

An analysis of the presence of death insurance depending on the type of family reveals that the households with the highest rates of taking out this insurance are those where a couple lives without minor children and where at least one of the members is over 65 years old (57.5%). Also notable are households where a person aged 65 or over lives alone (54.4%). It should be noted that the presence of death insurance is high in some family groups where there are young people living together. The households where it is least present are those made up of a person who lives alone and is under 30 years old.

The assurance level is increasing with age, reaching a maximum level of around 60% from the age of 70. However, it should be noted that the presence of death insurance now exceeds 40% among age cohorts over 25 years of age, which could respond to the impact of group policies, normally of a family nature.
