Today, on the eve of the new school year, 62 children in Narva received new school bags with school supplies as a gift. Backpacks are provided as part of the allowance for first-graders and are intended for children from low-income families who are going to school for the first time. This year, children will also receive new tablets for the first time.

Mayor of the city Katri Raik, deputy chairman of the city assembly Natalya Umarova and deputy of the city assembly Denis Larchenko congratulated the children on the beginning of the new academic year. According to Narva Mayor Katri Raik, the first day at school is one of the most special days in everyone’s life. “In the memory of every child and his parents, this day should leave the most wonderful feelings and emotions. I wish all the first-graders and schoolchildren of Narva the very best academic year!” said Katri Raik.

This year, for the first time, the city council of Narva allocated 6,000 euros for the purchase of tablets for first-graders from low-income families. City Assembly member Denis Larchenko drew attention to the fact that at a time when digital solutions have become an inevitable part of education, in addition to support in the form of buying notebooks and pens, smart devices should also be taken into account: “I am glad that in December last year, deputies of the City Assembly supported the piloting of the program “To each student – his own computer”, and this academic year, at least those who have a difficult economic situation will receive tablets. I hope that next year we will be able to expand this program to other target groups,” added Denis Larchenko.

This year, 475 pupils will go to first grade in Narva, 380 of them will go to municipal schools. All children entering first grade can receive a one-time school allowance. The right to receive a school allowance is for a child who starts basic education for the first time and whose place of residence, according to the population register, is the city of Narva. The amount of the allowance is 150 euros, which is paid to one parent of the child or another person raising the child whose place of residence, according to the population register, is the same as that of the child.

An application can be submitted between 12 September and 30 November in the year in which basic education begins.
