The comparisons between Israeli football and the rest of Europe and the whole world is something that runs in conversations about football throughout Israel all the time. The intensity, aggressiveness and physicality are things that are usually reflected in better leagues, but in the weekly research of ‘CIES’ the amount of cards drawn in 76 different leagues was examined, and the results may surprise you.
In terms of yellow cards, the Premier League ranks 20th among the 76 countries tested. In first place in this parameter can be found the first league in Bolivia, where an average of 6.46 yellow cards are drawn in a game. The referees in Israel stand on an average of 4.93 yellow cards per match.
For comparison, Serie A is in 31st place (4.71 per game), in the French league 3.89 yellow cards are issued per game, while in the top German and the Premier League it is even lower, with an origin of 3.83 and 3.37 respectively. Of the five top leagues, only in Spain are more yellow cards drawn than in Israel, where the average is 5.08.
In the Reds, the Premier League ranks 26th with an average of 0.28 per game, in this case the top league in Israel is on par with the top leagues in Italy and Spain, and 0.01 less than the French league. The English league, which is known as a fairly aggressive league, is five places from the bottom with an average of 0.12 reds per game. Of course, in each league you have to take into account the number of games played in it, since the number of teams in each league varies.
The last parameter tested is total cards in the game. In this case, the spectators in the Premier League see an average of 5.21 tickets drawn per match. As with the yellows, except for the first Spanish (5.23), the top league in Israel “leads” the top leagues in Italy (4.95), France (4.18), Germany (3.95) and England (3.49).
