Jodhpur: With the help of a brilliant century by former South African wicketkeeper-batsman Morne van Wyk, Gujarat Greats registered their first win by defeating Toyam Hyderabad by 8 wickets in their first match of Legends League 2024. After winning the toss and batting first, Hyderabad’s team scored 172 runs for 7 wickets. Gujarat won the match by losing two wickets in the last over.
Raina scored runs at a strike rate of 162
Chadwick Walton and George Worker opened the innings for Toyam Hyderabad. They lost their first wicket at a score of 19 when Worker was dismissed after scoring 13 runs off 8 balls. Walton could add 17 runs off 12 balls. He was dismissed by Liam Plunkett. At one point their score was 36/3 in 4.2 overs. Captain Suresh Raina and Ricky Clark added 46 runs for the fourth wicket. Raina scored 44 runs off 27 balls while Ricky Clark scored 15 runs off 17 balls.
In the final overs, Peter Trego scored 36 runs in 25 balls to take his team to 172. For Gujarat Greats, Liam Plunkett, Manan Sharma and Seekuge Prasanna sent 2-2 batsmen to the pavilion. Shannon Gabriel also took a wicket.
Dhawan’s bat did not work
Chasing the target of 173 runs, Morne van Wyk and captain Shikhar Dhawan opened the innings for Gujarat Greats. They added 83 runs for the first wicket. Dhawan was dismissed by Gurkeerat Singh Mann after scoring 21 runs in 20 balls. After this, Morne van Wyk was joined by Lendl Simmons. This pair added 63 runs for the second wicket. Simmons scored 20 runs.
Morne van Wyk completed his century innings and remained unbeaten on 116* off 69 balls. Yashpal Singh also remained unbeaten on 13* off 11 balls. For Toym Hyderabad, Isuru Udana and Gurkeerat Singh Mann got one wicket each.
