Moroccan diplomat heads Arab League mission to observe legislative elections in Lebanon

Cairo – The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, has appointed Moroccan diplomat Ahmed Rachid Khattabi, Deputy Secretary-General in charge of the Media and Communication Department, to head the League’s mission that will observe the legislative elections in Lebanon, scheduled for May 15.

As part of its mission, the Arab League delegation will hold a series of meetings with the authorities concerned with the preparation and organization of the legislative elections, including the Election Supervision Authority, the Constitutional Council, the Ministry of the Interior and Municipalities, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and civil society, the Arab League said in a statement.

According to the statement, a geographical distribution program was set up for the members of the mission in the different governorates of Lebanon in order to observe the conduct of voting, counting and sorting operations as well as the atmosphere of the elections in a number of electoral centers in accordance with the rules and requirements in force within the framework of the League of Arab States: commitment to integrity, credibility and duty of impartiality.

Lebanese voters will go to the polls next Sunday to elect a new parliament, the first since the outbreak of the country’s current economic and financial crisis. A total of 718 lists spread across 15 constituencies are competing for 128 seats.

The elections are taking place in the absence of the main Sunni political component, after former Prime Minister Saad Hariri announced his reluctance to run in the elections.
