The ONCF will invest 1,451 million euros in new trains and production facilities

The National Railway Office of Morocco, ONCF, has put out to tender the supply of 168 new trains within the framework of an investment plan that will serve to implement its development plan.

Of the 168 trains, 150 will be used for urban transport services, which include fast commuter trains and intercity trains. In addition, eighteen trains will be used to expand high-speed line services. According to the ONCF, the objective is to address the growing demand for train travel and modernize part of the current aging train fleet.

Moroccan industrial system

ONCF’s plans require a total investment of 1,451 million euros, which are perceived as a real opportunity to establish a Moroccan railway industrial system that could have an important economic and social impact. The tender process is now moving forward, focusing on the procurement of trains with a four-year delivery schedule and the establishment of a joint venture to provide ongoing maintenance services.

In November 2022, ONCF signed a €200 million loan agreement with the European Investment Bank representing 80 percent of a total €250 million loan the bank offered to ONCF.
