Moroccan Sahara: For a Peruvian MP, the official position of France, a “game-changer”
Lima – Peruvian MP and former president of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Peruvian Congress, Ernesto Bustamante, considered that the new position of France, which “plays a very active role in many international forums, particularly at the United Nations”, is a “game changer” in the Moroccan Sahara issue.
“France and the United States are two permanent members of the UN Security Council and support the Moroccan plan (for autonomy). Naturally, France’s position is a game-changer,” he said in a statement to MAP.
In a message addressed to His Majesty King Mohammed VI, it is recalled that the French President, Mr. Emmanuel Macron officially announced to the Sovereign that he “considers that the present and future of Western Sahara are part of Moroccan sovereignty”, while stressing France’s support for the Moroccan autonomy plan as “the only basis for achieving a just, lasting and negotiated political solution in accordance with the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council”.
The Peruvian MP noted that the Moroccan autonomy plan stands out on the international scene as “the safest, healthiest option and truly the only solution, from a practical point of view, for the region.”
Recalling that the UN Security Council will re-examine the issue of the Moroccan Sahara next October, Mr. Bustamante noted that the presence of France as one of the supporters of the Moroccan autonomy plan is very important, in the sense that it enshrines Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara.
