Moroccan Sahara: France’s position strengthens efforts for peace and stability in the region (Mexican expert)
Mexico – France’s support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara reinforces efforts made for peace and stability in the region, stressed Mexican international relations expert Pedro Diaz de la Vega.
In a statement to MAP, Mr. De la Vega indicated that this position reflects the strategic nature of relations between Rabat and Paris, noting that for France and the European Union, the Kingdom stands out as an “essential partner” in the collective effort to promote peace and development.
This is also a significant decision in the history of relations between the two countries, he said, adding that the support of France, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, is of capital importance, confirming Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces.
The international relations expert further indicated that this decision comes at a time when the Moroccanness of the Sahara and the autonomy plan presented by the Kingdom to definitively end this regional dispute enjoy growing support from the international community.
In a message addressed to His Majesty King Mohammed VI, it is recalled, the French President officially announced to the Sovereign that he “considers that the present and future of Western Sahara are part of Moroccan sovereignty.”
In this same message, the French Head of State assures His Majesty the King of “the inviolability of the French position on this national security issue for the Kingdom” and that his country “intends to act in accordance with this position at the national and international levels”.
