“Today, there is a real dynamic in relations between Israel and certain countries in the region, including Morocco, which must be invested in to give new impetus to the peace process,” Mr. Mjalli told MAP on Monday.
He added that the recognition by the Israeli government of the Moroccanness of the Sahara is a consecration of the international positions in favor of the territorial integrity of Morocco, which have followed one another since the recognition by the United States that the Sahara is an integral part of the Kingdom of Morocco.
Moreover, the expert stressed that Israel’s decision comes in the wake of an ongoing dialogue between Israel and Morocco, based on cooperation and understanding on several fundamental issues.
Noting that this decision should open promising horizons for economic cooperation between the two countries, including in the Southern Provinces, he noted that Morocco is a sovereign state which, like all countries in the world, establishes relations based on common interests.
On the other hand, Mr. Mjalli recalled that the Kingdom of Morocco has historically committed to supporting the Palestinian cause under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Chairman of the Al Qods Committee.
In this regard, he stressed Morocco’s continued support for the resistance of the Maqdissis and the preservation of the identity of the city of Al-Quds and its historical and religious monuments.
A statement from the Royal Cabinet announced on Monday that His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist him, received a letter from the Prime Minister of the State of Israel, His Excellency Mr. Benyamin Netanyahu, by which the Head of the Israeli Government brought to the Highest Attention of His Majesty the King the decision of the State of Israel to “recognize the sovereignty of Morocco over the territory of Western Sahara.”
In this regard, the Israeli Prime Minister indicated that this position of his country will be “reflected in all relevant acts and documents of the Israeli Government.” He further stressed that the said decision will be “transmitted to the United Nations, regional and international organizations of which Israel is a member, as well as to all countries with which Israel maintains diplomatic relations.”
In his letter to the Sovereign, the Israeli Prime Minister informed that Israel is positively examining “the opening of a Consulate in the city of Dakhla”, as part of the implementation of this state decision.
