During a statement to the CDH, Mr. Zniber criticized the Algerian regime’s instrumentalization of the Council’s work to promote its territorial claims over Morocco. He argued that this approach lacked respect for the Council’s agenda and undermined the integrity of the debates.
The Algerian representative allegedly claimed that his delegation aimed to create the illusion of supporting the Algerian regime’s thesis, despite its lack of legitimacy and connection to reality.
If the Algerian delegation were truly committed to upholding human rights, they would have questioned the numerous violations occurring in the country, affecting journalists, magistrates, civil society representatives, and the broader population. The ambassador observed that the Algerian government faced criticism for these violations from various countries.
Mr. Zniber further pointed out that the Algerian delegation’s contributions to the Council often focused solely on attacking Morocco, despite the Council’s awareness of the biased motives behind such maneuvers.
In contrast, Morocco, known for its diplomatic approach, emphasized its commitment to dialogue, negotiation, and compromise in its statement on July 30th. The Throne Speech of HM King Mohammed VI expressed Morocco’s willingness to find a realistic solution to the territorial dispute over the Sahara, without any aggressive actions towards its Algerian neighbors.
The diplomat criticized the Algerian regime’s behavior, which he argued aimed to maintain tension in the Maghreb region. He cited the Algerian government’s questionable initiatives and declarations as evidence of this hostility.
The United Nations has recognized the strong international support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and its autonomy initiative, which seeks to resolve the Sahara dispute peacefully. The organization noted that only a small percentage of member states endorse the Algerian regime’s positions.
The author concluded by emphasizing that the vast majority of people in the Sahara do not recognize the legitimacy of the Algerian regime’s claims or the separatist militias it supports.
