The event was attended by the Moroccan Ambassador to Ireland, Lahcen Mahraoui, members of the embassy, the Moroccan community established in Cork from the first and second generations, as well as Jerry Buttimer, Irish Senator representing Cork and member of the Morocco-Ireland Parliamentary Friendship Group.
After the greeting of the Moroccan and Irish national anthems and the screening of a film on the epic of the Green March, Mrs. Sanae Khabbar, who spoke on behalf of the Moroccan community in Cork, stressed that historical moments like the Green March remain etched in the memory of all Moroccans.
For his part, Mr. Mahraoui warmly congratulated the members of the Moroccan community for their sense of patriotism and pride in their country of origin, while emphasizing the significant scope of the Green March, a milestone in the completion of the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco.
He called on the Moroccan community to present the Kingdom’s assets and to defend its supreme interests, while ensuring the full readiness of the Moroccan embassy in Dublin to provide its support to the success of all actions likely to strengthen the bonds of friendship between Morocco and Ireland.
For his part, Senator Jerry Buttimer congratulated Morocco on this glorious occasion and for the many development projects initiated in the Kingdom, while welcoming the scope of the parliamentary diplomacy developed between Morocco and Ireland.
He also welcomed the dynamics of bilateral relations in recent years, illustrated in particular by the implementation of several cultural projects and university partnerships, as well as the recent opening of the Irish embassy in Rabat, expressing his willingness to work together with the Moroccan community residing in Cork to further strengthen relations between the two countries and ensure better visibility of Morocco in this Irish city in the southwest.
An open debate between the ambassador and the audience made it possible to identify proposals for actions to be carried out by the Moroccan community, including the creation of a Moroccan associative structure in the city of Cork. On this occasion, he assured the initiators of this project of the full support of the embassy.
The celebration of the Green March by Moroccans living in the city of Cork provided an ideal opportunity for the children present, from the second generation, to discover the scope and significance of the glorious Green March, one of the key moments in the contemporary history of Morocco which allows Moroccan identity to be imbued in communities abroad.
