Paris – The election of Morocco on Wednesday to the presidency of the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) is likely to strengthen the balance of this UN institution, stressed French jurist and essayist, Jérôme Besnard.

“In a very tense global climate, a Moroccan presidency is a guarantee of balance and common sense,” noted Mr. Besnard, also a professor of public law at the University of Paris-Cité, in a statement to MAP.

Mr. Besnard considered that the election of Morocco to head the CDH constitutes a “recognition of the major orientations included in the new Constitution of the Kingdom adopted in 2011 by the will of His Majesty Mohammed VI, in favor of the rule of law and respect for human rights.”

Morocco was elected to the Presidency of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the year 2024, during a vote held Wednesday in Geneva.

Of the forty-seven members of the United Nations Human Rights Council, 30 supported Morocco’s candidacy, compared to that of South Africa, which received only 17 votes.
