The Moroccan authorities intercepted nearly 87,000 migrants in an irregular situation in various operations carried out in 2023 in the waters of the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, as well as in other parts of the country, as reported this Wednesday by the Royal Armed Forces.

Thus, he stressed that the majority of those intercepted last year are citizens of sub-Saharan African countries, before indicating that the “intensification” of surveillance operations in their waters also led to the rescue of nearly 22,000 migrants, according to The Moroccan state news agency, MAP, has reported.

The balance has been published just two days after the Royal Armed Forces indicated in a statement on their account on the social network Facebook that nearly 1,100 migrants of different nationalities were detained in various raids in the north of the country, near the borders. with Ceuta and Melilla.

In this sense, he highlighted that these operations, “carried out in cooperation with local authorities and security forces”, took place in the cities of Nador, Mdiq and Fnideq. These last two towns are also known as Rincón and Castillejos, respectively.

The balance of the Spanish Ministry of the Interior, as of December 15, 2023, shows a total of 52,945 migrants who have arrived irregularly to Spain, which was 76.2% more than in the same period of 2022, when 30,048 arrived.

In this way, 2023 became a record year in migration since it was the second with the most irregular arrivals to Spain, after 2018, when 64,298 were registered. Furthermore, it was the first in which a greater number of people arrived in the Canary Islands (37,187), followed by 2006, with the so-called ‘cayucos crisis’ (31,678).
