Co-chaired by Omar Chafki, Director of the Bouregreg and Chaouia Water Basin Agency, and Rakesh Kumar Verma, Additional Secretary at the Indian Ministry of Water, this meeting allowed both parties to examine in depth the various aspects of cooperation in the field of water resources management and to explore new opportunities for collaboration.
This meeting was an opportunity to exchange experiences and good practices on key issues such as the siltation of dams and integrated water resources management at the watershed level, Mr. Chafki said in a statement to MAP.
Discussions also addressed groundwater resource management, the application of nuclear and isotopic techniques in water resource assessment and management, as well as resilience practices to the impacts of climate change, including seawater desalination, he added.
In this sense, he stressed the marked interest of the Indian side for the experience of Morocco, recognized for its expertise in public-private partnerships in the field of water, particularly in desalination.
During this meeting, Morocco and India also agreed to explore trilateral cooperation with African countries, taking advantage of the bilateral agreements that the two countries already have with several states on the continent, Mr. Chafki said.
The Moroccan-Indian working group on water resources was established by the memorandum of understanding (MoU), signed on December 14, 2017 in New Delhi between the two countries.
The Moroccan delegation also included Salaheddine Dahbi, director of the Oum Er-Rbia Basin Agency, Moulay Driss Hasnaoui, project manager at the Directorate of Water Research and Planning at the Ministry of Equipment and Water, as well as Moulay Aziz Drissi Yahyaoui, head of the cooperation department within the same ministry.
