Candidate for one of the twenty seats in Category C of the IMO Council, Morocco was able to garner the support of the majority of the Member States of the Organization, thanks to the mobilization of the entire diplomatic apparatus of the Kingdom, in close coordination with the Ministry of Transport and Logistics, indicates a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans living abroad.

This re-election, thanks to which Morocco will begin its 15th term within the IMO Council, reflects the credibility enjoyed by the maritime strategy implemented by Morocco, in accordance with the Vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, underlines the same source.

A maritime nation par excellence due to its geostrategic position, its long naval tradition and the maritime potential offered by its 3,500 kilometres of coastline extending over its Mediterranean and Atlantic maritime facades, the Kingdom makes a substantial contribution to the achievement of the mandate of the IMO, of which it has been a member since 1962.

As a member of the Council, Morocco will continue its action to implement the objectives defined in the Organization’s strategy in the areas of environmental protection, climate change, ship safety and security, technical development and training of seafarers.

The International Maritime Organization is a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for ensuring the safety and security of maritime transport and preventing pollution of the seas by ships.

The IMO Council, composed of forty members, is the body responsible for supervising its work and coordinating the activities of the Organization’s bodies.
